The ML Classic middle pickup is Suhr’s take on the vintage-inspired V63 wind, tuned to Michael Landau’s own spec for that snappy, articulate Strat voice he’s known for. It’s bright and punchy without tipping into harsh, with tight low end, a focused midrange that cuts through a band mix, and a top-end shimmer that stays smooth rather than glassy or brittle.
What sets the V63 (ML Classic) apart from a standard vintage-style single coil is its modified staggered pole piece layout. Rather than sticking to old-school staggering meant for vintage neck radiuses and lighter strings, Suhr reworks the pole heights to create a more even magnetic field across the string spread — a real advantage if you’re running a flatter modern neck radius or heavier gauge sets and want consistent output string to string.
This middle unit is wound reverse-wound/reverse-polarity (RW/RP), so it hums-cancels when blended with the neck or bridge pickup in positions 2 and 4, while still sounding like a true single coil on its own.
