Description
The Thornbucker exists because Pete Thorn got tired of humbuckers that only sounded good through a cranked, dirty amp. Switch to clean or semi-dirty, especially off the neck or middle pickup, and most modern humbucker sets collapse into mush — a far cry from the articulate, dynamic sound Pete remembered from great vintage guitars. He brought that frustration to Suhr, and the two spent countless prototypes chasing the tone of the best 50’s “patent applied for” pickups: the touch sensitivity, the harmonic complexity, the way they clean up when you back off the volume.
This bridge-position Thornbucker is the result. It’s built around an Alnico IV magnet with plain enamel wire, landing at 8.4KΩ DC resistance — a spec profile aimed squarely at that vintage voice rather than a modern hot-output push. Four-conductor hookup wire is included so you can split coils, wire it in and out of phase, or run any other modern switching scheme your guitar’s wiring allows, something the original PAFs never offered.
This particular listing is the 53mm spacing version with a Raw Nickel cover, giving it that understated, worn-in look right out of the box. Suhr also offers Thornbuckers uncovered in Black, White, Parchment, Zebra, and Reversed Zebra, so you can match it to whatever aesthetic your build calls for.
