Description
The Thornbucker neck pickup exists because Pete Thorn got tired of humbuckers that only sounded good through a cranked, dirty amp. Clean or semi-dirty tones on the neck pickup are usually where boutique humbuckers fall apart into mush, and switching between a humbucker guitar and a single-coil guitar mid-set often meant re-dialing your whole rig. Pete brought that frustration to Suhr, and the goal became clear: build a pickup with the touch-sensitivity, note separation, and airy top end of a truly great 50’s “patent applied for” pickup, without the loose tolerances and inconsistency that often come with vintage-spec parts.
Getting there took real trial and error. Suhr worked through combinations of magnets, wire gauges, covers, and winding specs, building prototype after prototype and A/B testing against genuine vintage benchmarks until the tone matched the feel — that elusive combination of clarity when picking softly and dynamic push when you dig in. The result keeps the vintage voice intact while adding practical upgrades: four-conductor wiring for coil-splitting and series/parallel wiring options, plus the tight manufacturing consistency Suhr builds every pickup to.
This is the neck position Thornbucker, wound to pair beautifully with clean tones, jazzy chord work, and singing lead lines alike, in a black cover.
