Description
The Thornbucker started with a simple complaint from Pete Thorn: too many boutique humbuckers sound great when the amp is dirty, but collapse into mush the moment you back off the gain or roll onto the neck pickup. He wanted the character of a great old “patent applied for” pickup – the clarity, the note separation, the way it cleans up under your fingers – without needing to switch tonal universes when you moved between single coils and humbuckers on stage.
Suhr answered that call with a set voiced around the best qualities of vintage-style PAFs, then quietly updated the recipe for modern players. This neck-position Thornbucker wears a gold cover and uses four-conductor hookup wire, so you’ve got the flexibility to wire it for coil-splitting, series/parallel switching, or whatever your control cavity demands.
Under the hood it’s an Alnico V magnet paired with plain enamel wire, landing at roughly 7.3K ohms of DC resistance – a spec sheet that reads vintage but plays modern. Expect articulate lows, a woody midrange that doesn’t smear, and enough headroom to stay clear when you dial back the gain or dig in for a semi-dirty rhythm tone.
