Description
Pete Thorn had a problem a lot of us know well: switch from single coils to a two-humbucker guitar mid-set, and suddenly you’re fighting mud in the neck and middle positions, retooling your amp and pedals just to get back to something usable. He brought that frustration to Suhr, and the Thornbucker is the answer — a humbucker set voiced to deliver the openness and dynamic response of a great 1950s “patent applied for” pickup, minus the compromises.
Getting there wasn’t a shortcut job. Suhr worked through magnets, wire gauges, covers, and winding variations across countless prototypes, chasing the specific harmonic complexity and pick-attack feel that makes vintage-spec PAFs so addictive. What they landed on is a pickup that stays articulate and three-dimensional whether you’re playing clean, edge-of-breakup, or fully cranked — no tonal cliff when you back off the gain.
This listing is the neck pickup, wound to 7.3KΩ DC resistance with an Alnico V magnet and plain enamel wire for that warm, rounded vintage voice with plenty of clarity up top. It’s built with 4-conductor hookup wire, so you’ve got full flexibility for coil-splitting, series/parallel switching, or any other wiring trick you want to run — a genuinely modern upgrade over the two-conductor originals it’s inspired by.
Finished in Parchment to match aged vintage hardware and pickguards.
