Description
The Thornbucker II is Pete Thorn’s refined take on his own signature Suhr pickup, built for players chasing that hot-PAF-into-a-cranked-plexi magic that fueled classic British high-gain tones. It’s the same pickup found in Pete’s Signature Standard HSS, now available on its own for anyone wanting that specific voice in the bridge position.
Suhr took the original Thornbucker wind and added a few more turns, pushing output up to 9k, then paired it with an Alnico II magnet instead of a hotter alternative. That combination is the key to this pickup’s personality: Alnico II tends to soften and round off the very top of the frequency range, so instead of an icy, brittle edge on high notes you get body and openness. The extra winding adds punch and fills out the midrange, but the magnet keeps things from turning harsh under gain.
The end result reads as warmth, power, sweetness, and clarity all at once — a bridge pickup that can drive a cranked amp hard without losing musicality on the top end, while still cleaning up nicely for more articulate playing.
