The Thornbucker II bridge pickup is Pete Thorn’s refinement of his original Suhr signature design — same DNA, more muscle. Suhr took the beloved Thornbucker wind and added extra turns on the coil (up to 9k), then paired it with an Alnico II magnet instead of the usual choices. That combination is the whole story here: Alnico II tends to soften and warm up the highs, so instead of a harsh, glassy edge on top you get body and openness on the high strings, even when you’re slamming a cranked amp.
Pete built this around the tones he chased for years — that hot-PAF-into-a-plexi voice that made high-gain British amps sound huge and musical rather than brittle. The extra coil turns give the pickup more push without sacrificing the clarity and warmth that made the original Thornbucker a favorite. It’s a bridge pickup that can dig into thick, saturated rhythm tones and still let lead lines breathe with sweetness and definition.
