Description
The Thornbucker exists because Pete Thorn got tired of humbuckers that only sounded good through a cranked, dirty amp. Backing off the gain or switching to the neck pickup shouldn’t turn your tone to mush, and hopping between a humbucker guitar and a single-coil guitar mid-set shouldn’t feel like landing on a different planet. That’s the problem Suhr set out to fix.
This is the 53 spacing bridge model in black, built for players chasing the specific magic of a great 50s “patent applied for” pickup: airy top end, present mids, and a clean tone that still has character instead of collapsing into mud. Suhr got there through obsessive prototyping – working through magnet choices, wire gauges, covers, and winding specs – listening at every step until the pickup captured that vintage feel without the usual vintage baggage.
Under the hood you get modern four-conductor wiring, so you’re not locked into simple series operation – split it, run it out of phase, wire it however your pickguard’s switching scheme demands. Suhr also offers the Thornbucker across a range of pole spacings, meaning this bridge unit can be matched correctly to your bridge’s string spacing rather than forcing a compromise.
If your goal is a humbucker that behaves like a great vintage pickup – dynamic, textured, responsive to pick attack, and just as happy clean as it is driven – the Thornbucker bridge is built around exactly that brief.
