Description
If your ears are chasing that specific 70’s single-coil snarl – the one under every hard-rock/blues crossover solo of the era – the V70 is Suhr’s answer. It’s built around plain enamel wire and specially formulated Alnico V magnets, hand-wound in-house using Suhr’s own proprietary process, then finished off with vintage-correct gray fiber bottoms for the right look and feel.
What sets the V70 apart from a straight vintage reissue is the modified staggered pole piece layout. Instead of the uneven string-to-string response you sometimes get from old-school staggers, this design keeps the magnetic field even across all six strings – which matters a lot when you’re leaning into those long, multi-step bends 70’s lead lines are built on. It also plays nicely with modern flatter-radius necks, so you’re not fighting your setup to get balanced output.
Tone-wise, expect a pickup that tracks your dynamics closely: tight, snappy low end, glassy top end, and a cut that stays sweet rather than brittle even when you dig in. Blues, classic rock, R&B rhythm work – it covers that territory without sounding one-dimensional.
