Description
The 59CBJS-S3 is Bartolini’s short-format neck pickup for 5-string Jazz Bass builds, part of their Classic Bass series aimed at players who want the vintage J tone opened up a bit. It’s a direct drop-in for the neck slot on a standard Fender-style J Bass, engineered to widen the frequency window compared to a stock single-coil so you get noticeably more sparkle and articulation up top while your lows and low-mids stay full and unaffected.
- Dual in-line coils wired for humbucking operation — quiet, hum-free performance
- Passive Classic Bass design with an extended, more resonant frequency response
- Epoxy-cast construction to keep microphonics and unwanted feedback out of the signal
- Short neck-length format: 3-5/8″ — matches the original short neck pickup found in vintage-spec J Basses
Fit matters here more than most swaps. Traditional Jazz Basses use a neck pickup that’s slightly shorter (3-5/8″) than the bridge pickup (3-3/4″), so this 59CBJS-S3 is built specifically to that short neck dimension. Some modern J-style basses instead run two long, bridge-length pickups — if that’s your setup, you’ll want Bartolini’s LN (long neck) version instead, not this one, and definitely not an actual bridge pickup dropped into the neck slot. A handful of instruments even pair two short neck-length pickups. Before ordering, measure your existing pickup to confirm you’re matching the correct length, since a mismatch means it simply won’t sit in the routing.
