Description
The Bartolini 9ST-L/S set brings a modern spin to the traditional J-bass single coil pairing. Built as matched neck (short) and bridge (long) units in black shells, this set is designed to be installed together as intended—when both pickups are active, they cancel hum effectively while retaining true single coil character. Run either one solo and you’ll get some noise, so this set is really built for players who want that classic dual-pickup Jazz Bass voicing rather than isolated single-pickup tones.
Tonally, the 9ST-L/S digs in deeper than a vintage-style Jazz pickup, favoring lows and low-mids over sparkly top end. Bartolini’s #1 winding scheme gives the bridge coil noticeably more growl and bite than you’d expect, while the neck coil stays brighter in comparison—together they create the push-pull dynamic that defines a great J-bass sound. Players familiar with the older 94J pickups will find these closely related, just with a touch more brightness at the bridge.
Coil construction is equal between neck and bridge, mirroring the original Fender pairing, and both windings are part of the 9J1 split-coil design built specifically for hum cancellation without sacrificing the openness of a single coil.
- Neck pickup length: 3-5/8″ (3.61″ / 91mm)
- Bridge pickup length: 3-3/4″ (3.73″ / 95mm)
- Single coil, sold as a matched neck/bridge pair
- Black shells only
A solid pick for bassists chasing deep, growly J-bass tone with the noise floor tamed by smart coil pairing rather than added electronics.
