The PBF-57 is the bridge half of Bartolini’s PBF series, a line built around one goal: capturing the good stuff from classic humbucker tone without the murk that can come with it. This particular winding is dialed in for Jazz players, giving you a bridge voice that’s round and vocal rather than glassy or thin, so single-note lines and chord melody work both come through with body.
Bill Bartolini developed the PBF series with Ed Reynolds, a guitar and bass builder and respected repairman from Chicago’s 70s and 80s scene who later moved his shop to Austin and now works exclusively on electric guitars. That real-world repair background shows in how these pickups are voiced — practical, musical, and built to slot into instruments people actually gig with.
Every PBF pickup, including the PBF-57, is fully potted in epoxy, which kills unwanted microphonics and squeal at higher gain or stage volume without stripping away the vintage character that makes this series worth seeking out.
This version comes with a Nickel cover, giving it a clean, understated look that reads right on a ’59-style Les Paul, a semi-hollow jazz box, or even a heavier setup where you want vintage tone with a little more polish.
