Seth Lover’s original Patent Applied For humbucker set the bar decades ago, but DiMarzio wanted to understand *why* the best vintage examples sounded so alive. Rather than tracing a random old pickup, they went straight to the source: Larry DiMarzio’s own 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul. What they found was surprising—a deliberately weak magnetic field that let the strings ring out longer while keeping the note focused, almost single-coil in its definition.
The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck rebuilds that character from the ground up using DiMarzio’s own patented engineering rather than a straight copy-paste job. Computer-controlled winders lay down 42-gauge custom-coated wire with the precision needed to nail that specific frequency response, and the coils get dipped in a custom wax formula to keep squeal and microphonics out of the equation.
Under the nickel-silver cover, a new plating process makes the shell more magnetically transparent than vintage originals—less interference between the coils and your strings, more of that open, articulate top end. The result is a pickup that stays warm without turning to mud, and cleans up beautifully with nothing but pick attack. It’s equally happy in the neck or the bridge, just like the best-loved humbuckers from the golden era.
