DiMarzio didn’t just clone an old patent-number pickup for this one — they reverse-engineered the actual tone of Larry DiMarzio’s personal 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul. What they found was surprising: the magic wasn’t purely in the pickup, but a weaker-than-expected magnetic field that let strings sustain freely while staying tight and articulate, almost single-coil-like in definition.
The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck reproduces that same soft magnetic pull on purpose. Less magnetic drag on the strings means more natural sustain and a response that reacts to how hard you dig in, cleaning up or breaking up based on pick attack rather than gain alone. Getting there took computer-controlled winding to lay down 42-gauge custom-coated wire with the exact consistency needed for that frequency curve, followed by a dip in DiMarzio’s own wax formula to keep things quiet and squeal-free at stage volume.
Topping it off is a nickel-silver cover with updated plating that’s more magnetically transparent than vintage covers ever were, so none of that carefully engineered tone gets choked off. The result is warm without turning muddy, and versatile enough to sit in either the neck or bridge position — the way the best-loved humbuckers of the ’50s always managed to do.
