Long before dual-mode pickups were a common trick, DiMarzio’s HS series broke ground as the first humbucking Strat® replacements back in the early ’80s. The HS-2 carries that legacy forward, and it’s stuck around this long because it actually delivers on the switchable-tone promise.
- In humbucking mode, expect a cleaner, brighter character than a typical humbucker — solid and natural rather than dark or compressed, so it stays articulate through high-gain rigs and rackmount setups.
- Flip to single-coil mode and you get one of the more convincing vintage Strat tones out there, but thanks to DiMarzio’s patented coil design, it doesn’t bring the usual single-coil noise floor along with it.
- Both modes are genuinely quiet, which makes the HS-2 a smart pick if you run modern high-gain amps, effects racks, or anything else that tends to expose noisy pickups.
