Description
The PAF Pro DP151 landed in 1986 right as chops-heavy playing and high-gain rack systems were taking over, and it was built to answer a specific problem: how do you keep the open, articulate feel of a vintage PAF while giving it enough presence to cut through a dense effects chain? Darker-voiced humbuckers tend to disappear into heavy processing, but the PAF Pro’s transparent character stays audible and defined even under a lot of gain.
Low strings come through with real snap and chunk rather than mush, and there’s a distinctive midrange bump that gives the pickup a subtle vocal quality — almost like a wah pedal parked halfway through its sweep. The Alnico 5 magnet and tuned treble response deliver highs that sit forward without turning harsh or brittle, which is why DiMarzio considers this one suitable in any position on the guitar.
It’s especially handy as a building block: drop it in the neck slot alongside a hotter bridge pickup (think Norton or X2N) for a well-balanced two-humbucker setup, or run it in the bridge next to single coils, where its moderate output blends smoothly instead of overpowering them.
