Description
FRED started life as a beefed-up PAF Pro, but somewhere along the way it developed a personality all its own. Push it into an overdriven amp or a distortion pedal and it throws off harmonic overtones that most humbuckers simply don’t have in their vocabulary — a sound that’s saturated, vocal, and a little bit feral without tipping into mush.
Output-wise, it sits right in line with the PAF Pro, so you’re not gaining raw power here — you’re gaining character. That extra growl comes from how the pickup reacts to unusual harmonic content rather than sheer wind or magnet strength. It’s also unusually responsive to your guitar’s volume and tone knobs, so small adjustments at the controls translate into real shifts in feel and grit, letting you sculpt the attitude on the fly.
This is the pickup Joe Satriani leaned on as his primary bridge unit before his signature Mo’ Joe came along, which tells you a lot about how expressive and lead-friendly this thing can be in the right hands.
- F-spaced for bridge routing under the high strings
- Creme cover
- Output comparable to PAF Pro, with added midrange harmonic complexity
- Highly responsive to volume/tone control adjustments
- A proven lead and rhythm bridge pickup for overdriven tones
If you want humbucker warmth with an unpredictable, harmonic-rich edge — especially for lead work through a cranked amp — FRED is worth a serious listen.
