Description
DiMarzio built the Air Classic (DP190) for players who love the warmth of a late-’50s PAF-style humbucker but got tired of the compromises that came with it. Old-school vintage tone usually meant reaching for a soft Alnico 2 or a deliberately weakened Alnico 5 magnet, since a strong field tends to grab the string and choke off sustain. DiMarzio’s Airbucker design sidesteps that trade-off entirely, letting a full-strength Alnico 5 magnet do its job while an air-gap structure keeps string pull to a minimum.
The payoff is a pickup that feels alive under your fingers – notes jump off the string with real speed, chords stay defined rather than turning to mush as they decay, and sustained notes keep their top-end sparkle instead of going dark and muddy. Pinch harmonics and pick-hand dynamics come through with unusual clarity, giving you a lot more expressive range to work with than a typical vintage-style bucker allows.
Best paired in the neck position with equal-or-higher output bridge pickups, or dropped into the bridge slot alongside single-coils or lower-output neck pickups. Works across solid body, hollow, and semi-hollow guitars alike.
Comes finished in cream, ready to drop into most standard humbucker routes.
