Born as the “Airbucker” take on the Norton, DiMarzio’s Air Norton (DP193) was originally aimed at high-gain bridge duty, but players quickly found it excels in the neck position too. Expect a tone that’s warm and full without turning muddy, plus an output that’s hot without tipping into distortion on its own. Unusual for a neck humbucker, it also throws off distinct harmonic character that keeps chords and single notes from sounding flat.
The magic is in DiMarzio’s patented Air Norton magnetic structure, which reduces string pull compared to a conventional humbucker. That means longer sustain and a pickup that tracks your pick attack honestly, so dynamics and touch sensitivity actually come through in the signal.
In the neck slot, it’s open and warm with enough output to sit well against most bridge humbuckers — try 500K pots if you want extra treble sparkle and harmonic detail. Drop it in the bridge and you get medium output with firm lows and biting top-end harmonics; 250K controls smooth things out, or run a 500K volume with a 250K tone to add warmth to the highs. It pairs naturally with an Air Classic Bridge model in the neck for a medium-output blues-rock voice, or with an Air Zone, Tone Zone, or Steve’s Special in the bridge for a more powerful combination. It also plays nicely with single-coils like The Cruiser, The Chopper, and Blue Velvet.
