Description
The D Sonic was DiMarzio’s answer to a simple problem: heavy players kept dropping their tuning lower and losing clarity in the process. This ceramic-magnet bridge humbucker keeps low strings tight and articulate under gain, while still cutting through with enough treble bite for standard-tuned solos. It’s not a one-trick pickup either — the 4-conductor wiring unlocks two distinct single-coil voices and a parallel humbucking mode alongside the standard series output, giving you four usable tones instead of one.
Mounting orientation actually changes the character here. Point the solid bar toward the bridge for a brighter, more defined attack — DiMarzio’s own recommendation for low tunings and thicker strings. Flip it so the adjustable pole pieces face the bridge instead, and you get a warmer, slightly louder response better suited to standard tuning and solo-heavy playing. Since each coil has its own tonal fingerprint, the two coil-split sounds aren’t mirror images of each other, and the parallel mode adds a third, cleaner and brighter option on top.
Built for the bridge position in solid body guitars, this F-spaced version is sized for guitars with wider string spacing at the bridge. If you’re familiar with DiMarzio’s back catalog, the look echoes the old MegaDrive, but the internal design is a clean-sheet redesign, not a reissue.
