Description
DiMarzio built the PAF Joe for Joe Satriani, who wanted a neck humbucker that split the difference between the aggressive clarity of the PAF Pro and the smoky warmth of a late-’50s Gibson humbucker. Satriani calls the result “tubular” — low notes stay articulate and defined instead of turning to mush, while high-fret single notes keep a round, singing quality rather than thinning out. Virtual Vintage construction is what makes that balance possible, layering clean low-frequency response under warm mids and top end, so the pickup handles chord work and lead lines with equal confidence. It made its debut on the road during Satriani’s 2003 G3 tour and has been a neck-position staple ever since.
Slightly lower output than the PAF Pro makes the PAF Joe an easy pairing with hotter bridge pickups — think PAF Pro, FRED, The Breed Neck Model, Air Norton, or Norton — and it works equally well in solid-body, semi-hollow, or hollow-body guitars. This F-spaced version in black is voiced for bridges with wider string spacing, keeping pole pieces lined up under every string.
