DiMarzio built the D Activator to chase the punch and clarity of active neck pickups while staying fully passive. The trick is in the coils, each tuned to specific frequencies so the pickup’s resonant peaks land right on the fundamentals and harmonics you actually want to hear. The payoff is a pickup that reacts instantly to your pick attack, whether you’re barely grazing the strings or digging in hard, without choking out or going cold under heavy playing.
Where a lot of “bright” pickups end up sounding thin and papery on the top frets, the D Activator neck stays full. Wound and plain strings alike hold their weight and definition all the way up the fretboard, with a string-to-string balance that’s genuinely surprising for a pickup this punchy. That consistency makes it equally at home in long-scale bolt-on necks and shorter-scale set-neck guitars, and it’s got enough snap and output to work as a bridge pickup too if you want extra bite.
This is the DP219 in the classic black cover, wired 4-conductor for coil-split and phase options. Like any passive pickup, it wants pots rated 250Kohm or higher to breathe properly — 500K is the safe standard choice, while a 1Megohm tone pot suits long cable runs.
