Description
DiMarzio didn’t just clone a PAF spec sheet for the 36th Anniversary series—they measured Larry DiMarzio’s personal 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul and reverse-engineered the pickup from there. What they found was a surprisingly weak magnetic field, which turns out to be the secret behind that legendary vintage sound: less string pull means longer sustain and a more articulate, single-coil-like focus even though you’re running two coils.
The Bridge version in this Anniversary line is wound hotter than its Neck sibling, giving it enough push for set-neck 24¾” scale guitars while still working beautifully in trem-equipped bolt-ons that need a bridge pickup with some bite. Coils are laid down on computer-controlled winders using 42-gauge custom-coated wire for consistent, repeatable frequency response, then wax-potted to kill squeal and microphonic feedback before assembly.
This particular DP223 comes housed in a nickel-silver cover with worn plating—the aged, broken-in look that makes it hard to tell apart from a genuine relic ’59. DiMarzio’s refined plating process also makes the cover more magnetically transparent than vintage originals, so you’re not losing top-end sparkle to the metal.
