Description
Designed for Steve Vai as the next evolution beyond his Evolution model, the Gravity Storm Bridge (DP253) takes his tone in a different direction: less about brute force, more about depth and character. Vai reportedly described the sound he was chasing as a “thundering cloud of ice cream” — and whatever that means to you, the pickup delivers both bite and sweetness in equal measure.
This is a moderate-output humbucker built around an Alnico 5 magnet, and it proves that impact doesn’t require huge numbers. Instead of the sharp-edged aggression of the Evolution Bridge, the Gravity Storm leans into warmth through the highs and mids. The top end is notably fat, which gives you room to dial up the treble on your amp without thinning out or losing sustain on the upper frets — a nice bit of headroom for players who like their leads to sing rather than shred into brittleness.
It’s also refreshingly low-maintenance: drop it in and you’re already close to the sound, without needing to chase EQ settings or rework your amp to make it work.
Named after a track from Steve Vai’s album The Story of Light, and recommended specifically for the bridge position.
