Description
The Transition Bridge Model is one half of the pickup set DiMarzio built alongside Steve Lukather for his Music Man LIII guitar, taking its name from his 2013 album Transition, which he recorded using this exact pairing.
Lukather had reached a point where he wanted less clutter in his tone — no gimmicks, just a direct line from fingers to amp. The bridge pickup answers that brief with a passive humbucker voice that’s punchy and assertive without turning brittle or one-dimensional. There’s genuine depth under the attack, so single notes and chords alike keep their shape at higher gain.
What makes it work for Lukather’s playing is the balance struck between raw output and touch sensitivity. It’s got enough bite for fast, technical runs and aggressive picking, but it doesn’t flatten out dynamics the way some hot bridge pickups can — pick softly and it cleans up, dig in and it pushes back with real force.
If you’re after a bridge pickup that can carry rhythm work with authority and still cut loose for lead lines without sounding harsh or thin, the Transition Bridge Model is built around exactly that kind of versatility, informed by a player who’s used it on record.
