The Illuminator Neck pickup is the neck-position half of John Petrucci’s current signature set for his Music Man JP13, and it exists because his older designs couldn’t quite cover everything he asks a guitar to do in one set. Petrucci wanted a pickup that could dive into massive, saturated overdrive one moment and turn around into something “expressive, dynamic and very liquid” for solos the next – all without one tone bleeding into the other.

DiMarzio answered that by pushing the Illuminator toward more clarity and presence than earlier Petrucci models had. Notes stay defined even when you’re layering on gain, and single-note runs come through with a smooth, singing quality rather than getting swallowed by mush – exactly the kind of touch-sensitive response a player leaning on dynamics and phrasing needs from a neck pickup.
