Description
DiMarzio built the Dark Matter 2 series around Steve Vai’s request for pickups that could keep pace with a high-gain rig without turning brittle or harsh up top. The Middle model (DP267F) fills the gap between the Dark Matter 2 Neck and Bridge humbuckers, matching their satin nickel finish and gear-pattern grille while doing its own thing tonally as a single-coil.
Rather than chasing a vintage single-coil chime, this pickup is voiced for cohesion. It’s ceramic-powered with real output (around 200mV, 7.33 Kohm DC resistance) so it doesn’t get buried when you switch to a humbucker position, but DiMarzio rounded off the top end just enough to avoid the icy, spiky edge that some high-output singles get. The result leans modern and balanced rather than twangy, with enough push to blend smoothly into a Dark Matter 2 humbucker set instead of sounding like an afterthought.
It ships wired 2-conductor for straightforward installs, and this F-spaced version is intended for bridge/neck-humbucker routed guitars where string spacing runs wider — worth checking against your bridge before ordering.
