Description
DiMarzio built the PAF 59 series by pulling apart Larry DiMarzio’s own 1959 Les Paul and reverse-engineering everything that made those original ‘Patent Applied For’ pickups sound the way they do. No shortcuts, no modern reinterpretation — just the same 2-½” degaussed Alnico 5 magnet, the same 42 AWG enamel wire, and the same scatter-wound, un-dipped coil construction that gave the originals their loose, organic dynamics.
The bobbins are Double Cream butyrate on a long-leg nickel/silver base plate, mirroring the original hardware down to the details (black and black & cream bobbin options are also available). Every part is made in the U.S.A. to 1959-level tolerances, so this isn’t a vibe — it’s a spec-for-spec homage.
Dropped into the bridge slot, the PAF 59 gives you that open, breathing dynamic response with a bright pick attack, a midrange that stays smooth rather than honky, and low end with real weight behind it. What sets the Bridge model apart from a straight neck-pickup clone is a subtle top-end roll-off — it takes the edge off ice-picky highs without smothering harmonic detail, so chords stay musical and leads still cut. Pair it with the PAF 59 Neck for the complete vintage-correct set.
