Description
Born from DiMarzio’s ongoing work with John Petrucci, the Crunch Lab 7 bridge model is the 7-string version of the pickup he leaned on for Dream Theater’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.” Petrucci has called it the best live and studio tone he’s found, and the name gives away the mission: this is a pickup engineered for a big, tight, crunch-driven sound that avoids both mud and thinness.
Sharing the exact physical footprint of the D Sonic 7, the Crunch Lab 7 hides a very different internal recipe. It’s not chasing screaming lead tones or exaggerated low end — instead it pushes more output with deeper, more articulate highs, while opening up the lows and mids so palm-muted riffs and dense chords keep their body and definition even through a heavily gained amp. Note attack comes through sharper and more forceful too, which is why DiMarzio designed it to be mounted with the solid bar facing the neck.
Built around a ceramic magnet with 4-conductor wiring for coil-splitting and phase flexibility, it’s a straightforward drop-in upgrade for players chasing modern, riff-heavy tones on their 7-string.
