Devin Townsend doesn’t do subtle, and neither does this pickup set. Built on Fishman’s Fluence Core technology, this ceramic-loaded bridge and neck pair gives you two fully realized voices per pickup instead of one compromise. Voice 1 is the heavy metal mode Devin designed for chaos — pole piece construction (rather than blade magnets) that’s tuned for maximum sonic havoc. Flip over to Voice 2 and you get something totally different: a low-gain, passive-feeling single coil tone that Devin himself prefers for its response into amps and compressors. Running both pickups together in Voice 2 also drops your overall volume and cleans things up, so switching from dirty to clean isn’t just tonal — it’s dynamic too.
This isn’t just a pair of pickups in a box. Fishman includes everything needed to wire up Devin’s actual live rig scheme (aside from the pickup selector itself): volume and tone pots, a push-pull voice selector pot that can live in either the volume or tone position, and all the cabling for installation. You can also access a humbucking version of Voice 2 via the push-pull switch, adding yet another texture to the palette. Choose single coil or double coil/humbucking operation depending on what the moment calls for.
Both pickups run on active Fluence circuitry powered by a 9-volt battery (or optional rechargeable pack), pulling just 2.2 mA — the neck pickup alone is rated for up to 110 hours of battery life. With 130 gauss at the string on both units and distinct peak frequencies per voice per position, the bridge and neck are voiced to complement each other rather than just match.
