Jason Becker didn’t want a generic hot-rodded humbucker — he wanted a specific balance, and it took Seymour Duncan years of back-and-forth to nail it. The result, the Perpetual Burn, pairs a 12K coil wind with an Alnico 5 magnet, landing right in that sweet spot between vintage warmth and modern push. It’s hotter than a traditional PAF-style pickup but stops well short of full-on ceramic aggression, keeping pick attack and note separation intact even at speed.
This is a pickup engineered around the demands of technical playing. Rapid-fire tapping, wide interval bends, dense chord voicings, sprawling legato runs — the Perpetual Burn tracks all of it cleanly, refusing to blur into mush when things get busy. That said, don’t file it under “shred-only.” The medium output and articulate voicing make it just as comfortable in progressive rock, fusion, or any style that demands clarity under pressure rather than just raw gain.
Every Perpetual Burn is hand-built in Santa Barbara, CA, and comes wired with 4-conductor lead for coil-splitting, series/parallel, or phase-switching setups — whatever your wiring scheme calls for. Vacuum wax potting keeps things quiet at high gain, eliminating microphonic squeal even under heavy overdrive. This bridge-position model ships in white and is available in both standard humbucker and Trembucker spacing to match your existing pole piece spread.
