Description
The SH-3 Stag Mag flips the usual humbucker formula on its head. Instead of bar magnets, Seymour Duncan built this pickup around staggered Alnico 2 rod pole pieces – the same type of magnet found in a classic single-coil – so each coil generates output on par with a genuine single-coil pickup, not the weaker half-coil sound you get from splitting a typical humbucker.
That means when you tap it down to one coil, you’re not left with a thin, anemic tone. You get glassy, bright, vintage Strat-style chime with real character. Switch back to full humbucking mode and the Stag Mag opens up into something thicker and more powerful, still carrying that airy high-end sparkle but with the girth and noise-cancelling stability of a true humbucker.
It’s a pickup built for players who don’t want to choose between single-coil sparkle and humbucker muscle. Classic rock, blues, funk, jazz, and country all sit comfortably in its range, and while it’s most often loaded into the bridge, there’s nothing stopping you from running it in the neck for a warmer, rounder split tone.
