Description
The SH-55B isn’t a modern reinterpretation of the PAF – it’s the real thing, co-designed by Seymour Duncan and Seth Lover himself, the engineer who invented the humbucker in the first place. Every material choice traces straight back to 1955: nickel silver cover and long-legged baseplate, butyrate bobbins, plain enamel magnet wire, an Alnico 2 bar magnet, a wooden spacer, and black paper tape holding it all together.
Crucially, Seymour Duncan left this one unpotted. No wax dip means the coils are free to breathe (and squeal a little under stage volume), which is exactly the point – that faint microphonic edge and airy openness is part of what makes original PAFs sound the way they do. Expect warm, woody midrange, a slightly compressed top end, and dynamics that respond to how hard you dig in rather than how high the output number is on the box.
- Alnico 2 magnet for smooth, vocal PAF character
- Nickel silver cover and baseplate, butyrate bobbins, plain enamel wire
- Unpotted construction for authentic vintage microphonics
- Vintage-style single-conductor cable
Best used as part of a matched neck/bridge SH-55 set for players chasing genuine vintage tone across the board. Prefer a bit more punch from the bridge for heavier rock textures? Pair this SH-55 in the neck with an SH-11 Custom Custom in the bridge instead.
