Description
Long before it became a surf and shoegaze staple, the Jazzmaster was pitched at jazz players chasing a rounder, softer single-coil tone — and this SJM-1n neck pickup is Seymour Duncan’s faithful trip back to that original design. Nothing about the construction, dimensions, or magnet layout has been modernized; it’s built to match the vintage spec down to the details, so it drops into an existing Jazzmaster wiring harness and pickguard without any surprises.
Tonally, expect a moderate output with a noticeable lift in the mids and highs rather than a scooped or bassy response. That character is what makes it work so well across such a wide net of styles: twangy country runs, glassy surf leads, warm jazz chording, bluesy bends, and clean-to-edge-of-breakup classic rock all sit comfortably in its wheelhouse.
Pair it with its companion bridge pickup, the SJM-1b — the neck unit is reverse wound so the two work together as a hum-canceling set when both are switched on, a nice bonus for anyone who’s fought Jazzmaster noise before.
- Vintage-correct Jazzmaster neck pickup
- Moderate output, boosted mids and highs
- Reverse wound for hum-canceling with SJM-1b bridge pickup

If you’re restoring a Jazzmaster to its original voice or just want the neck pickup that started it all, this is the one to reach for.
