Description
If your Stingray’s stock electronics feel like they’re holding back what the bass can actually do, the SMB-4DS set is Seymour Duncan’s answer: a matched pickup and preamp pairing designed specifically for 4-string Music Man territory. Rather than piecing together components and hoping they play nice, you get both halves of the tone equation built to work as one system.
The pickup itself runs on two large ceramic bar magnets, so you’re getting that punchy, aggressive output ceramic is known for, paired with a wider frequency window than you might expect from a Stingray-style humbucker. Forbon flatwork and 4-conductor leadwire round out the build, and everything is vacuum wax potted to keep things quiet even when you’re digging in hard.
Where it gets interesting is the STC-3M3 preamp — a 3-band EQ that lets you sculpt bass, mid, and treble with real precision instead of just nudging a passive tone knob. Combined with the ceramic pickup’s inherent midrange bite, you end up with a bass that can go from thick and rounded to snappy and cutting without swapping instruments.
This is built as a drop-in replacement for 4-string Music Man Stingray basses with the 3-knob control layout. It may work in OLP instruments too, but measure your pickup cavity against the SMB-4DS dimensions before ordering to be safe.
