Description
Think of this as Seymour Duncan’s answer to the modern Strat player who still wants that classic bell-like snap but with strings and neck radii that vintage-era pickups were never designed around. The Vintage Flat Strat shares its coil recipe with the SSL-1, but swaps in hand-ground rod Alnico 5 magnets of equal length set flush with the flatwork instead of the traditional staggered stack.
Why flat instead of staggered? Because today’s unwound G strings and flatter fingerboard radii throw off the balance that staggered poles were originally calculated for. Leveling the magnets restores that even string-to-string response, and you’ll feel it most when bending — no more sudden volume dropout or that thin, choked-out feeling on certain strings.
Tonally, it sits right where you’d expect a Duncan single-coil to sit: clean, articulate, and unmistakably vintage, with a brighter attack and sharper transient snap than the APS-2. It’s got the sparkle for surf and rockabilly, the twang for country, and enough top-end bite to cut through in blues, ska, pop, and classic rock settings without ever sounding harsh.
This particular version is reverse-wound/reverse-polarity, meaning it’s built to hum-cancel when paired with an adjacent standard-wound pickup in your middle position — silent quack, zero compromise on tone.
