The SSL-6 Custom Flat takes Seymour Duncan’s familiar Strat single-coil formula and reshapes the magnet for players who’ve moved to lighter strings or guitars with a flatter fretboard radius. Instead of the staggered pole pieces found on vintage-style pickups, the flat alnico 5 rod magnets sit level across the string spread, delivering consistent output from your low E through your high E instead of favoring certain strings over others.
Under the flat magnet layout is an overwound coil, so you get more push than a stock single coil without losing that springy, glassy Strat attitude. Chords stay jangly and clear, but single notes come through with real authority — leads cut, sustain holds a beat longer, and the pickup doesn’t fold under a hot amp or a dirty pedal. It’s tuned to sit right between vintage character and modern output.
Loaded solo in the bridge, it’ll give a Strat some extra bite where it usually thins out. Run a full set of three for a Stratocaster that sounds bigger across the board, or pair it in the bridge with Vintage Flats in the neck and middle for a setup that covers both spanky cleans and gritty leads.
Construction-wise, each bobbin is hand-built from Forbon fiberboard, lacquer-dipped, then wound and wax potted to keep microphonic squeal out of the equation at higher gain. Seymour Duncan uses their modern oval Forbon flatwork rather than the old triangular style, so this pickup drops straight into any standard single-coil routed guitar without modification.
