The Custom 5 Trembucker started life as a community mod — players in Seymour Duncan’s own forums swapped the ceramic magnet out of an SH-5 Custom (or the Alnico 2 out of an SH-11) for Alnico 5, chasing a bridge pickup with more vintage character but no less muscle. It worked well enough that Duncan put it into production, and it’s become a go-to for guitarists who want the push of a Custom without quite as much saturation on tap.
Compared to its SH-5 and SH-11 siblings, the Alnico 5 magnet softens the distortion edge and pulls the tone back toward classic PAF territory, while keeping the output strong enough to drive an amp hard. Backed off, clean tones open up with a richer, more present low-mid body — this isn’t a one-trick high-gain pickup, it cleans up with real character.
Built for the bridge slot, the Custom 5 is a favorite pairing partner for a ’59 in the neck, giving you a genuine vintage-inspired PAF voice across both positions but with a hotter, more assertive bridge tone underneath. As a Trembucker, it’s wound for the wider string spacing found on tremolo-equipped guitars and post-1999 Gibson bridges, so spacing stays correct without pole pieces sitting off-center.
