Description
The EMG 89 solves a problem most guitarists have faced at some point: wanting both humbucker muscle and single-coil snap without swapping guitars mid-set. It’s built as two distinct pickups sharing one alnico V-loaded housing, each running its own onboard preamp tuned specifically for its mode. Flip between them using the included push-pull pot, and you’re not just cutting a coil for a thinner tone ““ you’re switching into a fully voiced, purpose-built circuit.
Dual coil mode leans into that classic EMG character: thick, warm, and powerful, with the clarity to keep dense chords from turning to mud. Think of it as a close cousin to the EMG 85. Pull the pot and you’re in single coil territory ““ bright, glassy, and chimey, channeling the spirit of a Strat pickup (and closely related to EMG’s SA). Both modes stay remarkably clean and present, which makes the 89 just as comfortable tracking gnarly riffs as it is comping through jazz changes. Drop it in the bridge or neck ““ it holds up either way.
Because it’s an EMG, installation skips the soldering iron entirely thanks to the brand’s solderless system.
