Description
The PQ-1 is Tom Anderson’s answer to a question players have been asking for decades: why can’t a soapbar-style pickup sound this good AND stay dead quiet? The “Q” is literally for quiet — you get the familiar soapbar cover and that beloved in-between voice, without the 60-cycle hum that’s always come with the territory.
Tonally, this pickup sits in its own lane. It’s got more air and top-end sparkle than a fat humbucker, but more low-end heft and midrange presence than a thin single coil. Anderson’s R&D team tuned the highs so they’re detailed and musical rather than glassy or brittle, backed by lows that are big without turning muddy, and midrange that fills things out without dominating the mix like a traditional humbucker can.
Output-wise, it’s balanced right in the pocket — not weak, not overly hot. Push it into a cranked amp and it breaks up with authority; back off and it cleans up beautifully. That dynamic range, paired with true hum-canceling operation, means you finally get authentic P-style character without babysitting your amp’s noise floor.
Anderson also refined the build details on this series: polepieces are precisely aligned for maximum string-to-magnet engagement, and the height adjustment screws sit slightly further outboard, making fine-tuning your action and balance easier.
- Vintage-output soapbar voicing built specifically for neck position
- Hum-canceling PQ design — no 60-cycle buzz
- Rich, full low end with controlled, non-shattering highs
- Balanced output: cleans up nicely, pushes into dirt when driven
- Precision-aligned polepieces; repositioned height screws for easier adjustment
- Cream cover
