Bartolini built this P/J combo to solve the classic mismatch problem: P and J pickups voiced separately rarely sit well together in the same bass. Here, the 8S at the neck (a vintage-flavored P-Bass replacement with beefed-up lows and low-mids) is paired with the 9JL1 at the bridge, a split-coil hum-canceling design wound for extra growl. The 9JL1 is a close cousin to Bartolini’s older 94J pickups, just a touch brighter, with more low-end punch than a typical vintage-style bridge pickup. Together they’re balanced to blend rather than fight, giving you P thump and J snap from the same instrument.
The set ships wired into Bartolini’s HR-3.4/918 harness, a 3-band EQ preamp with premium pots that eliminates the guesswork of matching pickups to electronics on your own. Control layout is a single Volume hole (Neck/Bridge stack) and a two-hole Tone section (Treble/Bass stack plus Mid, with push-pull for 2 frequency options), so you get real shaping power without drilling extra holes in your bass.
