Description
DiMarzio built the Air Norton by taking the Norton’s DNA and running it through their Airbucker magnetic structure, and the result is a neck pickup that does things vintage humbuckers can’t touch. It’s warm without turning to mud, hot without collapsing into distortion, and it throws off harmonic overtones that neck humbuckers usually don’t bother with. The Air Norton design cuts string pull, so notes bloom with more sustain and your pick attack stays expressive instead of getting swallowed. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, roughly 270mV output, 12.58k DC resistance. Wire it to 500K pots if you want to keep the treble and harmonic detail up front.
On the bridge side, the F-spaced Norton splits the difference between DiMarzio’s FRED and The Tone Zone — it’s got some of FRED’s snarling, slightly nasty upper harmonics but carries more midrange muscle and low-end weight, closer to Tone Zone territory. It’s louder and thicker than a vintage-style bridge pickup but stops short of full distortion-humbucker territory, which is exactly why DiMarzio calls it one of their most versatile bridge options. F-spacing keeps the pole pieces aligned under Floyd Rose and other floating-trem string spacing. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, around 352mV output, 12.62k DC resistance.
Together they cover a lot of ground — medium-output blues-rock, fat clean tones, and high-gain lead work — without either pickup fighting the other for space in the mix.
