Description
Seymour Duncan built the SJM-1 set to nail everything that made the original 1957 Jazzmaster pickup special — that slightly dark, mid-forward voice jazz players loved before surf guitarists hijacked the design and ran it through a truckload of reverb. Construction, magnet layout, and output are all faithful to spec, so you get the same moderate output with a boosted midrange and top end that lets chords bloom without turning brittle.
The set includes the SJM-1N for the neck position and the SJM-1B for the bridge. Wired together, the neck pickup is reverse-wound relative to the bridge, giving you hum-cancelling performance when both are selected — a nice bonus the vintage originals didn’t always deliver reliably. Each pickup ships with a waxed cloth hookup cable for that period-correct wiring feel, though note neither comes with a cover, so you’ll want to source your own or run them exposed.
These pickups suit players chasing country twang, surfy tremolo runs, jangly pop, laid-back blues, jazz comping, or classic rock rhythm tones — basically anywhere a Jazzmaster’s particular scoop-and-shimmer character fits.
This bundle also throws in a free set of Ernie Ball 2222 Hybrid Slinky strings. They pair a heavier wound side with lighter plain strings (.009, .011, .016, .026, .036, .046), built from nickel-plated steel wound around a hex steel core with tin-plated high-carbon steel plain strings, for a balanced feel and tone that complements the vintage character of these pickups.
