The ML Standard is Suhr’s answer to a simple question: what happens when you cherry-pick the best-sounding traits from a legendary vintage pickup collection and hand them to John Suhr for refinement? Built in collaboration with LA studio great and solo artist Mike Landau, this set draws from Mike’s own vault of prized vintage Strat pickups, translating what made them special into a hotter, more modern design without losing that classic character.
Expect tight, controlled low end, a midrange that stays present without getting harsh, and a top end that sparkles rather than shrieks. The Standard version is wound hotter than the base ML, giving you more push into your amp and noticeably longer sustain, useful whether you’re chasing singing lead tones or want your rhythm work to cut through with a bit more authority.
Each pickup in the set is calibrated individually for its position rather than treated as identical units. The middle pickup uses reverse winding and reverse polarity for hum-cancelling in the classic in-between switch positions. All three pickups use a modified staggered pole piece layout designed to keep the magnetic field even across strings, which matters more than ever on modern necks with flatter radiuses and today’s typical string gauges.
