Description
The ML pickup line is the result of John Suhr sitting down with L.A. studio great and solo artist ML and picking apart what actually makes a vintage single-coil special. Not all old pickups are worth chasing – some just sound better than others – so the design pulls from the standout examples in ML’s own vintage collection rather than any single formula.
The result lands in that sweet spot between big and detailed: full-bodied lows with real tightness, plus the airy high-end shimmer that makes single-coils worth the hum in the first place. It’s equally happy under a searing lead line or a clean, glassy rhythm part, giving you a wide dynamic range from one pickup rather than forcing you to pick a lane.
This is the bridge position pickup in Parchment, part of a set that’s calibrated per position – meaning the middle pickup (sold separately) uses reverse winding and reverse polarity for hum-cancelling when paired with neighboring pickups, rather than a one-size-fits-all wind.
The ML comes in two flavors depending on how far back in time you want to go:
- ML Standard – slightly hotter output. Bridge DC resistance: 6.9K ohms.
- ML Classic – more vintage-voiced. Bridge DC resistance: 6.5K ohms.
Whichever version you choose, this is a pickup built to reward the discerning ear over a shelf spec sheet – a genuine upgrade for anyone chasing that elusive great vintage single-coil sound without the great vintage single-coil hunt.
