The DiMarzio Model J set takes the classic Fender Jazz Bass voice and gives it more muscle without losing the roundness that made that tone famous in the first place. Rather than stacking coils to cancel hum (which piles on resistance and dulls the top end), each Model J pickup is independently humbucking — one coil per string pair. The result is a quiet, clear signal with real punch behind it, and a bigger, more resonant low end that lets the instrument’s natural character come through.
Fretless players in particular will appreciate how well these pickups respond to nuance. Roll the tone control back slightly and double-stop glissandos or violin-style vibrato take on a warm, woody character that feels genuinely vintage. Want more tonal range? Drop a Model J into the bridge and pair it with a DiMarzio Model P in the neck — the P’s fat low-end warmth combined with the J’s tight bridge bite covers a lot of sonic ground from one instrument.
This set (DP123) is built for the original Fender Jazz Bass routing, which uses two different cavity sizes — the neck pickup here is shorter than the bridge pickup. If your bass uses matched cavity sizes instead, the Model J is also sold individually as DP123S (short) or DP123L (long); check the dimensions before ordering to be sure you get the right fit.
