DiMarzio built the PAF Pro for the moment guitar playing got faster and amps got louder. Rack systems and high-gain heads were taking over, and players needed a pickup that could keep the open, airy character of a vintage PAF while still slicing through dense processing instead of dissolving into it. The result is a humbucker with real transparency — it doesn’t get swallowed up in the effects chain the way darker-voiced pickups can.
Low strings come through with snap and chunk rather than mush, and there’s a distinctive midrange bump that gives the PAF Pro a subtle vocal quality, almost like a wah pedal frozen halfway through its sweep. Up top, the highs have been dialed in to stay present and articulate without tipping into harshness.
Because of that balance, the PAF Pro is one of those pickups that works as a foundation piece no matter how you build your tone around it. Drop it in the neck slot next to something hotter and aggressive — a Norton or an X2N both make excellent partners — for a two-humbucker set with real contrast. Or run it in the bridge on its own, where its moderate output plays nicely with single-coils elsewhere on the guitar; it adds bite without burying them.
This F-spaced version is voiced for guitars with Floyd Rose or other wide-spaced bridges. Also a great neck pickup choice in nearly any guitar.
