Description
Born from a two-year collaboration with Steve Vai to nail the sound behind his Ibanez JEM guitars, the Evolution Neck humbucker isn’t shy about making noise. It’s voiced fat, punchy, and loud, built around DiMarzio’s patented dual-resonance design that pulls extra harmonic overtones out of the string that a standard humbucker would leave on the table. The result is a pickup that responds like it’s got attitude built into the coils.
While it was engineered for Vai’s specific rig, the Evolution Neck translates surprisingly well onto set-neck instruments like Gibson Les Pauls and similar guitars. Drop it in and low notes suddenly have more shove behind them, feedback becomes easy to summon on demand, and the harmonic content stays rich and complex rather than muddy. This isn’t a pickup for players who want polite, background-friendly tone — it wants a hot amp and someone willing to dig in.
Live, it cuts through a loud stage mix with real authority. In the studio, that same aggressive presence and definition means it slices through dense arrangements instead of getting buried, making it just as useful behind a microphone as it is under stage lights.
