Description
The APS-2 takes the same coil recipe as the APS-1 and swaps in hand-ground rod Alnico 2 magnets, all cut to equal length and raised above the flatwork. That flat pole arrangement spreads the magnetic field evenly across the strings, which matters a lot if you’re running modern sets with an unwound G or playing a flatter neck radius. Bends stay consistent in output from string to string instead of one pole overpowering the rest.
Tonally, it’s clean and vintage-leaning, and thanks to the softer pull of Alnico 2, it breaks up noticeably earlier than an Alnico 5-loaded pickup like the SSL-2 — great if you like your amp doing some of the work at lower volumes. Each pickup ships with a waxed cloth hookup cable and a vintage-style keyed bottom plate for period-correct looks and easy install.
This is a calibrated three-pickup set for Strat-style guitars, pairing two standard APS-2 units (neck and bridge) with an RW/RP middle pickup, so positions 2 and 4 on a five-way switch come out hum-canceling. It’s especially at home in warmer-sounding ash, alder, or basswood bodies, and plays nicely with both maple and rosewood boards.
Genre-wise, think country twang, surf splash, rockabilly snap, blues grind, ska chank, and classic rock crunch — players like Albert Lee, Jerry Donahue, and Charlie Crowe have leaned on this voice.
