The SSL52-1 tackles a classic single-coil headache: how do you get chime on top without the low strings turning thin and brittle? Seymour Duncan’s answer is a mixed-magnet design, running Alnico 2 under the three treble strings and Alnico 5 under the three bass strings.
The Alnico 2 side softens the attack on your G, B, and high E, giving you a rounder, more forgiving top end that doesn’t bite too hard on single-note lines or chord work. Meanwhile, the Alnico 5 side keeps the low E, A, and D strings tight, springy, and full of definition, so palm-muted riffs and rhythm chugs don’t get lost. It’s essentially two presence ranges working in tandem, rather than one magnet trying to do everything.
The net result is a neck pickup that feels remarkably even across the whole fretboard – smooth and rich up top, bright and snappy down low – without ever sounding scooped or one-dimensional. It’s a true single-coil at heart, so expect that authentic Strat sparkle and dynamic pick response, just with a bit more balance baked in.
